Synopsis by Mark Deming

A girl who longs for more exotic surroundings gets her wish when a bit of Russia appears in her hometown in this comedy-drama from filmmaker Ineke Smits set during World War II. Marie (Madelief Blanken) is a young woman who has lived all her life on the Dutch island of Texel. Marie has grand dreams and ambitions, but hasn't had the opportunity to do much with them; she finds life on the island culturally stifling, and wants more out of her future than an arranged marriage and a weekly church service. Change comes to the island one day as soldiers from Soviet Georgia taken captive by Nazis are brought to Texel to be billeted with the local population. Marie is fascinated by the Georgian P.O.W.'s and longs to know more about their lives, their customs and their dancing, especially after she sneaks into their barracks and watches part of a Soviet movie musical, The Aviatrix Of Kazbek. Marie becomes infatuated with one of the soldiers, despite the fact they don't share a common language, but her romantic ideals are shattered as the realities of the war are felt in Texel. De Vleigenierster Van Kazbek also stars Anamaria Marinca, who plays the plucky flier in the film within the film; screenwriter Arthur Japin was inspired by the actual housing of Georgian P.O.W.'s in Texel during World War II.
