Synopsis by Mark Deming

A "coyote" is the nickname for someone who smuggles illegal immigrants across a border in exchange for a fee, and filmmaker Chema Rodríguez offers an in-depth profile of one such guide and three of his clients in this documentary. Marco makes his living helping people make their way into America, and in Coyote he assist three people who are looking for a better life as they cross from Guatemala into Mexico, and after making their way across the country jump the border into the United States. After slipping into Mexico, Marco assigns his charges new identities -- as a musician, a salesman and a teacher -- and gives them forged documents with their new names. As they make the long voyage through Mexico, Marco and the immigrants become friends and experience both danger and adventure in their travels, but it's the final leg into the United States that proves most daunting. Coyote was an official selection at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival.
