Synopsis by Mark Deming
A group of kids learn about life and love against a backdrop of strife and poverty in this drama from Senegalese filmmaker Ben Diogaye Beye. In a community in Dakar where the adults have to face a shortage of jobs, corrupt leadership and economic exploitation on a nearly daily basis, their children are trying to make sense of the world around them, but are most curious about the mysteries of love. A group of ten year old school children try to make sense of their first crushes and their curiosity about how others feel about them; some have learned a fool-proof way of discovering if someone loves you (it involves writing on a leaf), one boy is embarrassed when his love note ends up in the hands of his teacher, a girl who is leaving her third-grade boyfriend imagines them flying away to the moon, and a boy is uncertain about his feelings when he finds the girl he likes is the daughter of a notorious street beggar. Amour D'enfant (aka A Child's Love) received its American premiere at the 2006 African Diaspora Film Festival in New York City.
