Review by Hans J. Wollstein

It makes sense that 47-year-old Spencer Tracy would fall head-over-heels for twentysomething Lana Turner. The fact that they marry and that the union eventually sours sounds reasonable enough, too. But Turner's reasons for leaving Tracy are unclear. Not only doesn't Zachary Scott appear as the kind of man anyone would trust, the heretofore very level-headed Turner's sudden flightiness and resentment seem utterly contrived. Why the sudden change? Perhaps Sinclair Lewis' original novel gives the answer, but MGM's version certainly doesn't. And to compound matters, the film completely wastes the talents of Mary Astor, which is truly unforgivable.
