Synopsis by Mark Deming

The last days of a marriage are acted out for a handful of unsuspecting friends and relatives in this domestic drama from Iran. Mina (Taraneh Alidousti) has grown disenchanted with her husband Morteza (Mohammad Reza Forutan) and announces she wants to divorce. Morteza, however, isn't so eager to part ways after a decade together and decides they should spend the weekend at his mother's vacation home by the ocean to see if things can be patched up. Morteza and Mina's privacy is spoiled when her sister Azar (Afsaneh Baygan) shows up unannounced and begins making a show of her deep depression. Adding to the uncomfortable atmosphere, Morteza's good friend Aziz (Bahram Radan) also pays a surprise visit and finds himself bantering with Azar. As the scene around her becomes more chaotic, Mina wrestles with her emotions as she discovers she may be pregnant. Canaan was an official entry at the 2008 Fajr Film Festival.
