Review by Hans J. Wollstein

As was often the case in low-budget melodramas like By Appointment Only, the leading players were much too old for their roles. The aristocratic Aileen Pringle, once the preeminent exponent of bodice-ripping Elinor Glyn heroines, is also badly photographed. Similarly, former silent flapper Sally O'Neil, who ages from 14 to 17 in the film, looks a ripe 25 and much too old for juvenile actor Edward Morgan. Even more troubling, however, is the fact that Lew Cody, playing the inventor of a new heart valve, is depicted smoking cigarette after cigarette! Like its sister company Chesterfield, Invincible became a sort of last hurrah for silent screen stars and By Appointment Only also featured Marceline Day and Pauline Garon who, like Sally O'Neil, were former Wampas Baby Stars now down on their luck in the new, audible Hollywood.
