Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man is torn between saving his skin and his loyalty to his best friends in this drama from Brazilian filmmaker Jeferson De. Macu (Caio Blat), Pibe (Silvio Guindane) and Jaiminho (Jonathan Haagensen) are three close friends who grew up together in the same favela neighborhood on the outskirts of Sao Paulo. Macu's friends have moved on, but still maintain close ties with the neighborhood -- Pibe is a successful insurance broker, and Jaiminho is a rising star in professional football, having signed a lucrative deal to play in Spain. Macu, however, still lives with his family -- sweet natured mother Sonia (Cassia Kiss), two faced stepfather Francisco (Ailton Graca) and half-sister Elaine (Cintia Rosa), who is pregnant with Jaiminho's child. Macu has fallen into debt to a local gangster Sergio (Edu Acaiabe), who has forced Macu to let him use a room in their house for his illegal business ventures. But Macu isn't sure what to do when he learns of Sergio's next scheme -- kidnapping Jaiminho for a hefty ransom. Broder was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.
