Synopsis by Mark Deming

1991 marked the centennial of the birth of Sergei Prokofiev, one of the most celebrated Russian composers of the 20th century, and to mark the occasion, the Bolshoi Ballet Theater in Moscow presented a special evening of music and dance in tribute to his creative legacy. The performance was filmed for posterity, and Bolshoi Prokofiev Gala presents nearly three hours of highlights, with dance legends Ludmila Semenyaka, Yuri Vasyuchenko, and Alexander Vetrov performing dance pieces from such Prokofiev-scored ballets such as Romeo and Juliet, Stone Flower, Ivan the Terrible, and more. Also included is a biographical sketch of Prokofiev, as well as a short history of the Bolshoi Ballet.
