Synopsis by Jonathan Crow
This is a compelling portrait of the passionate Gypsy cult chanteuse Vera Bila. Though she sells out venues across Western Europe, at home in the Czech republic she is regarded with suspicion and contempt because of her ethnicity. Local rumormongers carp that she sits on vast amounts of cash while her brethren remain impoverished. In fact, she lives with her husband and adopted child in a modest apartment, shops for used clothing, and walks outside in her bare feet. What emerges is a woman who has a true zest for food, her husband, and her Romany heritage. Black & White in Color was screened at the 1999 Sarajevo Film Festival.
