Review by Craig Butler

Between Two Worlds is a rather boring fantasy of the "afterlife" variety. While it perhaps deserves credit for not saving its big (but not original to modern viewers) revelation -- that the passengers on board the ship are all dead and on their way to Judgment -- but getting it out of the way fairly early on, it also must be said that after the revelation there's not a great deal that keeps the viewer's interest. Certainly, the plot advances, as each of the passengers' stories is related and his or her final resting (or not-so-resting) place is determined; but it's done so terribly earnestly and with so little surprise that it simply drags on and on. What comes before isn't exactly fast paced, either, and that is World's biggest problem: it simply doesn't engage the viewer. That's not the fault of Sydney Greenstreet and Edmund Gwenn, who turn in a couple of entertaining performances that keep the viewer awake in between mawkish moments. But they're counterbalanced by Paul Henreid's and Eleanor Parker's dreary turns and by John Garfield's oafishly overbaked one. The supporting cast can't do much with their material, either, despite the presence of such as Sara Allgood and Dennis King. The music, however, is quite good, and the physical production pleases.
