Synopsis by Mark Deming

A charming reprobate reveals just how low he's willing to sink in this dark comedy from Sweden. Janne (Johannes Brost) is a man who lives to party, enjoying sex, drugs, and loud music with little concern for tomorrow. At one time, Janne seemed like a typical hipster, but now that he's close to sixty years old, living like he's still stuck in the 1980s is beginning to take its toll. Having just been released from probation for some unnamed scrape with the law, Janne has joined forces with financier Klas (Peter Carlberg) to open a nightclub near Bastad called Avalon, named for Janne's favorite Roxy Music album. The club is doing well, and one night Janne and his sister Jackie (Leonore Ekstrand) are out celebrating his return to the nightlife when he drunkenly kills a handyman from Lithuania in an auto accident. Janne and Jackie tell Klas about the accident, but don't inform the police for fear of the effect it would have on the club's business. The harder they try to cover up the accident, the more their efforts threaten to fall apart. Avalon was the first feature film from writer and director Axel Petersen, who received the International Critics Award for best debuting filmmaker at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
