Too busy to personally direct all of Biograph's films by late 1909, D.W. Griffith turned over the directorial reins to actor Frank Powell for the one-reel All on Account of Milk. Mary Pickford plays a young heiress whose housemaid (Blanche Sweet) is laid low by curdled milk. While the maid convalesces, Pickford takes over the girl's domestic duties. Meanwhile, a wealthy young contractor, dissatisfied with the work of his laborers, dons overalls and begins construction on his latest project himself. The contractor meets Pickford and assumes that she's a maid, while she assumes that he's a common workman. Meanwhile, the maid's sweetheart assumes that his girlfriend has been stolen away by the contractor. How this mess gets straightened out within the allotted ten minutes is anybody's guess. Though Mary Pickford was not billed in the film's credits, reviewers were quick to note that this talented young lady was rapidly becoming the "star" of the Biograph stock company.
