Synopsis by Hans J. Wollstein

Although it appeared in the conclusion of chapter seven of Adventures of Red Ryder that Red (Donald Barry) was felled by a hail of bullets, the victim proves to be the killer Matt Grimes (Ernest Sarracino). Eluding his pursuers, Red returns to Mesquite where he turns himself in to Sheriff Dade (Carleton Young). Promising to check out Grimes' confession, written on a wooden table at the Outpost Shack, Dade orders Red to be jailed in the meantime. When Red realizes that Dade is crooked and may destroy the evidence, he tricks Deputy Jones (Robert Burns) into letting him out of jail. It comes to a confrontation at the outpost where Red tricks Dade into confessing his culpability. With the crooked sheriff locked up in his own jail, Banker Drake (Harry Worth) and Ace Hanlon (Noah Beery) decide to help him escape. One-eye Chapin (Bob Kortman) is ordered to free Dade and then set the jail on fire. The plan succeeds and Red is desperately trying to save Cherokee when the blazing roof caves in.
