Synopsis by Mark Deming

Love, inexperience and unconventional desires lead a young couple into unexpected places in this provocative drama from Vietnamese filmmaker Thac Chuyen Bui. Duyen and Hai are a couple in their early twenties who have fallen deeply in love. The two get married, but Duyen is a sexual novice and isn't certain how to arouse his new bride; for weeks after the wedding, their marriage remains chaste, and Hai begins to question her feelings for Duyen. Duyen is close friends with Cam, a woman a few years his senior, and one day he confesses his troubles to her. What Duyen doesn't know is that Cam is a lesbian, something she makes sure not to reveal in the repressive atmosphere of Hanoi. Cam is strongly attracted to Hai, and sees an opportunity in Duyen's failing marriage to win her over. Cam persuades a gay friend named Tho to seduce Duyen, in hopes this will shatter his relationship with Hai and send the lovely bride into her arms, but this plan has unexpected consequences for everyone involved. Choi Voi (aka Adrift) was an official selection at the 2009 Venice International Film Festival.
