Review by Donald Guarisco

A feminist take on exploitation themes might sound like an odd proposition but it's the only way to describe A Gun for Jennifer. This unusual obscurity mixes social issues with grindhouse filmmaking in a manner that is equal parts sloppy and intriguing. The sloppy part deals with the film's sense of technique. The obvious low budget hampers the look both in style and scope, the photography has a humdrum, locked-down style, and the sparse set design often gives it a cheap, student movie look. On a deeper level, the script suffers from a similar lack of precision in its storytelling, falling apart in the third act with cheap gore and action clichés when it should be offering something more inventive. Despite these problems, cult movie types will want to stick with A Gun for Jennifer because it manages to put a fresh, female-centric spin on old action and exploitation movie motifs. The dialogue is surprisingly good and three effective performances anchor the film: co-writer Deborah Twiss is compellingly mysterious as the film's secretive heroine, Freida Hoops is convincing as the gang's edgy leader, and Benja Kay is believably world-weary as the put-upon female cop trying to solve the crime. Ultimately, A Gun for Jennifer is probably a little too rough around the edges for the average moviegoer, but its offbeat approach will intrigue fans of offbeat, cultish fare.
