American screenwriter Paul Gangelin inaugurated his Hollywood career in the late-silent era. Gangelin's output leaned towards the melodramatic, as indicated by Hell's House (1932), Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1942) and The Scarlet Claw(1944), the last-named film is arguably the best of Universal's "Sherlock Holmes" series. He was also skilled at spoofery (The Boogey Man Will Get You) and western action: it was Gangelin who penned the original story for My Pal Trigger (1946), Roy Rogers' favorite of all his theatrical features. One of Paul Gangelin's last scriptwriting efforts was The Giant Claw (1957), a negligible Columbia flying-monster film.
