Pascal Bonitzer has a reputation as one of the most prolific screenwriters of France. He was the editor of the film magazine Cahier du Cinema from 1969-1985 and began work on another film magazine, Traffic, in 1992. From 1986-1994, he worked as the director of the screenwriting department of the Paris film school FEMIS. He made his directorial debut with Encore in 1995; his second feature, Rien Sur Robert (1998), received attention both in France and at the 1999 International Berlin Film Festival.

- Il débute sa carrière en 1969 dans les Cahiers du cinéma où il exerce comme critique.
- Il adapte en 1976 pour le réalisateur René Allio le livre "Moi, Pierre Rivière, ayant égorgé ma mère, ma sœur et mon frère : un cas de parricide au XIXe siècle" de Michel Foucault.
- La même année, il publie son premier ouvrage "Le Regard et la Voix : essais sur le cinéma".
- Il devient en 1986 directeur du département Scénario à la Fémis.
- Il réalise en 1996 son premier film intitulé "Encore".
- "Le Grand Alibi", son cinquième long métrage, sort en 2008. Il s'agit d'une adaptation du roman policier d'Agatha Christie "Le Vallon".
