American silent-screen comic Nick Cogley entered films with the Selig Polyscope Company in 1910 but hit his stride as a comic with the Keystone company in 1913. Cogley was in The Bangville Police (1913), the one-reeler that more than any other became the forerunner for the famous Keystone Kops. Usually seen in supporting roles, Cogley later portrayed African-American characters in "blackface," a tradition that, sadly, was still very much alive well into the 1930s.
