Biography by AllMovie

John Griggs was an elegant-looking character actor who specialized in blustery, unctious businessman types, as well as judges and military officers. A theater actor from the 1930s onward, he was primarily New York-based and also worked extensively in radio and, later, in television. Among his early work in the latter medium, he was the voice of the Al Capp-created Dick Tracy parody Fearless Fosdick in the series of the same name. He is most well known, however, for having portrayed Ralph Kramden's boss, Mr. J.J. Marshall, the head of the Gotham Bus Company, in three classic episodes of The Honeymooners ("A Dog's Life," "Opportunity Knocks But," and "The Golfer"), part of the package of 39 filmed episodes that have been rerun thousands of times. He subsequently appeared on The Joey Bishop Show as Joey's boss, J.P. Willoughby (he always seemed to be playing characters who used initials in lieu of names...). Griggs resided in New Jersey and passed away in early 1967 at the age of 57.
