- In 1997, his father bought land in Florida's Haines City so he could build a track in the backyard for James.

- In a 2004 interview with the St. Petersburg Times, said: "It does feel good to be the first (black) ever, but I honestly don't sit here and think about it a lot."
- Haines City, in 2007, marked "James Stewart Week" to honor the then-21-year-old motocross champion.
- In 2008, became second rider ever to complete an undefeated season, winning all 24 races he entered. (Ricky Carmichael was the first.)
