Makeup artist Jack Pierce created the faces of Universal Studios' most memorable monsters: Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, and the Wolf Man. A native of New York City, Pierce started out acting on-stage. Before becoming a makeup artist for the 1931 version of Frankenstein, he worked in films as a stunt man, bit player, assistant director, and a cameraman. Pierce served as the head of Universal's makeup department from 1936 into the mid- to late '40s.
