A stage actor and director, Cass began helming films in 1937 with Lancashire Luck. He resumed directing after World War II, and was widely admired for The Glass Mountain and the Alec Guinness comedy Last Holiday. His notable later work includes the horror tale Blood of the Vampire and the thriller The Hand.
