Before joining the film industry, Edwin H. Knopf worked as an editor in his brother Alfred's distinguished publishing house. Edwin became a leading actor on Broadway and in Germany in 1920; by 1928 he had become a successful theatrical producer and decided to move to Hollywood where he began working as a director and a screenwriter. He became head of MGM's scenario department in 1936. Knopf became a full-fledged producer in the early 1940s.
