Review by Craig Butler

You Came Along starts out as a comedy about three devil-may-care air force pilots and ends as a get-out-your hankies weeper, which is not an easy trick to pull off. You isn't totally successful at making this switch, but it comes a lot closer than many other films than have attempted the same thing. Credit director John Farrow, for his sensitive handling smooths over quite a few of the bumps in the screenplay. That screenplay has some very nice moments and some of the writing is strong and distinctive; yet there are also stretches that feel tired and unfulfilled, as if the writers didn't really believe in what they were writing but knew they had to play by a certain rulebook. (This being filmed during the height of the studio era, they very well had to do just that.) You also benefits from an appealing cast. Robert Cummings was right at home in light comedies, and so his work in the first half is as expert as would be expected. Bu the also had a more serious side to him, and he's equally adept when You takes its U-turn in that direction. Lizabeth Scott was a distinctive actress with a wonderful manner and an allure that was practically tangible, and she does very well here. Throw in smooth work from Don DeFore and Charles Drake, and the result is a film that may not be great but definitely has entertainment value.
