The abundance of sex comedies in the 1960s, such as Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed?, is simply astounding. In some ways, Bed is astounding, too -- not because it's a great film, or even a great example of this sometimes silly, sometimes offensive genre. Bedis astounding because of the childish double entendres that it employs; it's like listening to a bunch of 9-year-olds wearing business suits and cocktail dresses and pretending to be sophisticated. The laughable would-be sophistication of the dialogue is the only thing that stands out about Bed's screenplay, which is otherwise par for the course for this kind of film. Bed does at least boast an appealing cast, with Den Martin in light comedy mode and tossing off lines with admirably careless abandon. A very young Elizabeth Montgomery looks great and does as best as can be expected with her role, while an equally young Carol Burnett manages a very funny strip tease. Jill St. John is also along for more eye candy, and the rest of the cast is fine. Bed wears out its welcome very quickly, and its attitude toward women is appalling at times, but the cast does help to make the going easier.
