Japan is a nation with a reputation as a well-ordered society where courtesy and not rocking the boat are commonplace. At the same time, beneath the surface there's an aggressive and confrontational side to the national character struggling to come out, and one place where that side is obvious is in the nation's thriving avant garde music scene. Japanese noise music is some of the most extreme in the world, and the frantic, wildly abrasive creations of Japan's noise artists take the radical experimentalism of the avant garde and the challenge posed by punk rock to a brand new level. Filmmakers Cedric Dupire and Gaspard Kuentz examine the new underground of Japanese music and the nexus between art and daily life in the nation in their documentary We Don't Care About Music Anyway, which features interviews with musicians who use cellos, electric guitars, turntables, computers and much more to create rough but compelling aural textures. We Don't Care About Music Anyway received its North American premiere at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival.
