Review by Keith Phipps

The description may make this sound like a Japanese precursor to the Look Who's Talking series but, for the most part, Watashi Wa Nisai is not terribly far removed from director Kon Ichikawa's other uncompromising films of this period. In fact, the English translation of the title, Being Two Isn't Easy, is something of a red herring. Though told at times from the perspective of two-year-old Taro Hiro Suzuki, the film is just as concerned with the problems of parenthood. A young, apartment-dwelling middle-class couple finds themselves unprepared for the difficulties of raising a child, particularly one as trouble-prone as theirs. Before the episodic film reaches its end, young Taro has faced both near-suffocation, the measles, and a dangerous staircase. Alternating whimsical asides from the child's perspective with a relatively straightforward family drama, Watashi Wa Nisai almost can't help but feel disjointed and a more modest effort than some of the classics Ichikawa was turning out at the time. Even so, without ever announcing its ambition, it follows the cycle of life from birth to death, ultimately arriving at a moving finale.
