Review by Fred Beldin

Don't be fooled by the fancy packaging -- this is not veteran smut director Joe Sarno's new horror/sex picture, rather a re-release of his 1974 lesbian vampire film Veil of Blood. It was produced in Sweden with Marie Forsa, star of the director's later sexploitation picture Bibi. While the film stays true to an atmospheric, Gothic vampire plot, the sex is ultimately what's on display here. There's no blood to speak of, and nearly all of the vampire attacks are sensual rather than deadly. It's difficult to follow the plot, since every actor sports an impenetrable accent, but what does it matter when we're treated to orgiastic vampire women every ten minutes, writhing naked before flames and caressing phallic candles? Sarno even treats us to the sight of a woman getting her clothes torn off by vampire bats. Vampire Ecstasy attempts a sophisticated art-house tone, but it will only impress those who mistake European castles and accented English for "style." Even with endless lesbian sex, the film moves slowly and confusingly to its abrupt ending, though the considerable audience for naked lady vampire films will consider it a triumph and a lost classic.
