Review by Hans J. Wollstein

Often dismissed by connoisseurs of B-Westerns, the Eddie Dean PRC oaters belong among the most poverty-stricken ever made. Happily, Tumbleweed Trail is a surprisingly well acted and pleasantly melodic little sagebrush tale, nothing to get excited about, of course, but certainly no embarrassment. The rather dour-looking Eddie Dean is perhaps no Roy Rogers, but he doesn't fall off his horse, and even sings a couple of pleasant ditties (written by Dean himself and fellow B-Western regulars Glenn Strange and Johnny Bond) in customary fine voice. Roscoe Ates, in the comedy sidekick role, had toned down his trademark stammer by 1946 and Shirley Patterson remains one of the more fetching prairie flowers. The blonde Miss Patterson, who would later act under the name of Shawn Smith, made a total of four Westerns with Dean (of which Tumbleweed Trail was the second). Boy actor John McGovern later lent his voice to one of the "Lost Boys" in Walt Disney's feature-length Peter Pan (1953).
