A middling romance, Those Endearing Young Charms is a mildly diverting way to pass an hour and a half or so, but it's nothing more. Modern audiences especially may find Charms a bit hard to swallow, objecting to Laraine Day's willingness to believe that womanizer Robert Young really will change his stripes -- especially when there's been precious little throughout the film to make one believe this could be so. Still, other films have had similar failings and didn't let that stop them. Charm's problem is also that its characters aren't developed with enough originality, and that the story doesn't surprise the viewer in interesting and unexpected ways. Of course, many viewers aren't really so much interested in those things as in having a familiar story that they can follow with ease, and for undemanding viewers, Charms' script will be perfectly adequate. Certainly, Day and Robert Young are quite attractive and capable performers, and if Bill Williams doesn't display impressive presence, he's still a nice looking man. Ann Harding is also on hand to make more of her "wise mother" character than most actors would, and Anne Jeffreys has some nice moments. Charms is certainly painless, but it's nothing special.
