Review by Craig Butler

The Cape Feare episode of The Simpsons ranks very high on the list of the series' best episodes, if for no other reason than the fact that it features the infamous and hilarious "rake" scene. Impossible to describe without making it seem simply idiotic, this sequence is a masterpiece of minimalist humor. But the entire episode is a winner, with far too many gags and cultural references to begin to list. The writing is superior, even given the high standards set by the Simpsons writing crew during its best years; whether lampooning films such as Cape Fear and The Night of the Hunter or creating an hilarious H.M.S. Pinafore finale that simultaneously delineates just how self-absorbed Sideshow Bob is, Feare never hits a false note. The episode also includes a classic "how dumb IS Homer?" segment, as he attempts to get his feeble mind around the fact that he must hide out under the assumed name of "Homer Thompson." Director Rich Moore makes sure there is plenty of visual humor as well (Bob's underneath-the-car ride through a cactus patch, his decimation by a parade, etc.), and the animation is top notch. The series regulars turn in their usual excellent vocal turns, and Kelsey Grammer is especially delightful in this, his third appearance as Bob. TV comedy, animated or not, simply doesn't get better than this classic episode.
