Review by Hans J. Wollstein

Louis Hayward, the original Simon Templar, may not have possessed quite the savoir faire of his successor, George Sanders, but is instead much more athletic and outgoing. Like Sanders, though, he too has a way with a wisecrack. "Don't you think," he asks an abducting thug, "that a girl with a name like Viola Throckmorton has bigger problems than simply letting herself get kidnapped?" Happily, everyone else in The Saint in New York is allowed in on the joke, including a couple of hoods (Paul Guilfoyle and Jack Carson), who deliver a sort of dry running commentary of the sometimes violent goings-on.
