Review by Jeremy Wheeler

Classic Muppet characters are looted once again for an adaptation that misses the mark, this time with The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, an almost-there affair by the same people that delivered the mediocre It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie. Ironic enough, the same problems that hindered that production also come into play here -- namely, a confused script that, more often than not, injects awkward adult humor where it doesn't belong. Not only that, but the film dares to play around with drop-dead lousy computer effects that are a slap in the face to the legacy of ingenious puppetry of Jim Henson. Now, to be fair, the flick isn't all burned barbecue grossness. A bunch of good gags still litter the picture, even if you still have to put up with random Quentin Tarantino cameos and a collection of tepid music numbers that make you pray for the return of Paul Williams. Not bad as a time waster, though don't expect this one to be remembered alongside the genius that makes up much of the earlier Muppet material.
