Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Nanette Fabray and Bill Quinn return as Mary's parents, Dottie and Walter Richards. Newly retired, Walter has way too much time on his hands, with no hobbies, interests, or close friendships. Helpful daughter Mary (Mary Tyler Moore) decides to alleviate Daddy's boredom by promoting a friendship between Walter and her boss, Lou Grant (Edward Asner). This episode makes a passing reference to a nightly ritual at the Richards apartment that would probably have resulted in a whole half-hour on a show like All in the Family. "You've Got a Friend" first aired on November 25, 1972.
