Review by Perry Seibert

The overly familiar, paint-by-numbers Jungle Book 2 should have been a direct-to-video release. The story does little more than rehash numerous conflicts from other family films. Thanks largely to his impressive voice-only performance in Monsters, Inc., John Goodman disappoints as the bear Baloo. His line readings give off the feeling that he had no one to interact with during the recording sessions. Haley Joel Osment is simply too familiar a voice to allow the audience to suspend disbelief when his animated counterpart speaks. Seemingly the only creative reason to make this film was to get these two actors to duet on a new version of "Bare Necessities," but their cover lacks the charm of the original. Technically competent, but dishearteningly derivative, Jungle Book 2 feels like a cynical attempt to cash in on people's goodwill toward a Disney classic.
