A delightfully brisk, fast-paced drama with a good story and beautifully vivid characterizations, The Home Stretch (not to be confused with the identically titled Charley Chase vehicle released the prior year) benefits not only from excellent performances and direction, but also superb editing, by no less a figure than future director Lewis Milestone. The action sequences, mostly involving horse races, are beautifully shot and cut into the film, and none of the dramatic shots lingers even a frame too long, which helps to make this one of the most eminently viewable of silent titles. Indeed, one needn't even be a particular fan of horse racing to enjoy this fine little piece of entertainment, which in pure visual storytelling terms is nearly as engaging in 2006 as it was in 1921.
