Based on a play by Michael Arlen, who had been considered "naughty" a generation or so before, The Golden Arrow must have been exactly the kind of movie Bette Davis later risked suspension and worse to avoid. But in 1935, she had little say and here she is playing a variation on the old Cinderella theme. Not a very logical variation, mind you, or even an entertaining one, but a rather dull morality lesson masquerading as a lighthearted comedy. Charles Kenyon's script may have been a welcome parody of advertising stunts in the mid-'30s, but is today overly verbose and repetitive.
