Review by Craig Butler

The first film version of The Glass Menagerie was not well received upon its initial release, with considerable criticism directed toward stage superstar Gertrude Lawrence in the role of Amanda Wingfield. While it's true Lawrence is somewhat miscast, both her performance and the film itself are deserving of wider acclaim. Lawrence is not the ideal Amanda; her peculiar mannerisms, which were probably perfect for the stage, draw a bit too much attention to themselves onscreen. In addition, she too often is clearly acting the part, rather than being the character. Nevertheless, she has an undeniable presence, and the power she brings to the role does not fail to make an impact. During those stretches when she really connects, she is riveting. There are no complaints about her co-stars, with Jane Wyman a touching and tender Laura, Arthur Kennedy appropriately caustic and restless, and Kirk Douglas bringing his charisma to the role of the gentleman caller but keeping enough of it in check that it doesn't overwhelm the part. A bit of Tennessee Williams' dialogue was excised or softened, but what remains demonstrates the extraordinary power of the piece and its ability to achingly portray both the fragility and brutality of human nature. Despite a few flaws, this The Glass Menagerie is a captivating experience.
