Review by Karl Williams

Alarmingly bad, this action comedy belongs in the scrap heap of films that could not even achieve the quality level of a Hal Needham film. Director Adam Rifkin tries to present most of the material as broadly and cartoon-like as possible, signaling his intention that none of the unfolding events are to be taken seriously, but a few more sober scenes betray his ambition to be taken seriously as an action auteur. Unfortunately, this script has less depth and coherence than even that of a Renny Harlin picture. The knee-jerk inclusion of rock & roll artists Henry Rollins, Flea, and Anthony Kiedis is a transparent attempt to appeal to the hipster set that boosts the ill will generated by The Chase, rendering the film strictly for completist mega-fans of those musicians. Although their relationship is supposed to be one of mutual hate that dissolves into irresistible sexual fireworks, Charlie Sheen and Kristy Swanson do not generate the heat of a firefly -- their steamy love scenes laughable for the inane dialogue and stunning lack of chemistry. Rifkin has enjoyed much greater success as the screenwriter of quality projects for kids such as Mouse Hunt (1997) and Small Soldiers (1998).
