Although the rather bland Donald Woods is probably not everyone's idea of Perry Mason, The Case of the Stuttering Bishop benefits from earnest portrayals by an august Warner Bros. stock company that includes Ann Dvorak as Della Street and Joseph Crehan as private eye Paul Drake, the latter quite different than his later television counterpart, William Hopper. Like its immediate predecessor, The Case of the Black Cat (1936), the whodunit is a bit complicated but journeyman director William B. Clemens keeps the audience guessing all the way through and the production is typical of the care that a major studio could bestow on what is essentially the lower half of a double bill.
