Review by Craig Butler

There's not a lot of plot in The Caddy, but whether that's a good thing or a bad thing likely depends upon your fondness for the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis team -- or, more likely, on your fondness for Lewis. Less plot means more "set pieces," situations in which Lewis gets to display the distinctive comic style that made him so enormously popular for many years. For detractors, the quality of those set pieces means little; to them, a good Lewis sequence and a bad Lewis sequence is determined more by length (and the shorter the better) than by quality of the content. For fans, however, there's great variety in the comedian's work, and Caddy does contain a couple of segments -- most notably the crashing of a very elegant party -- that are held in high esteem. There are any number of other less-notable sequences, built around the premise that Lewis is an incredible golfer who becomes spastic when in front of an audience, that will also likely please them. Martin fans, meanwhile, can be entertained by his vocal work here and most notably by the introduction of one of the songs most associated with the singer, "That's Amore." Donna Reed fans will find little here to attract them, as the actress is given little of interest to do -- and, of course, does it well.
