Synopsis by Mark Deming

A private eye sets out to do the work the police will not in this entertaining documentary from director Phil Cox. In India, an overworked and often corrupt law enforcement system has left many citizens frustrated, and a growing number of private investigators have set up shop to help people deal with crimes the police can't or won't solve. Rajesh Ji is one such detective, and in The Bengali Detective Cox follows him and his team as he handles cases ranging from a bootlegger dealing counterfeit beauty products to a multiple murder. Ji also has ambitions to make it in show business, and we watch as he and his assistants work on their dance moves for an appearance on a televised talent competition; in addition, the film offers a look into his home life, as he looks after his wife who has serious health problems. The Bengali Detective was an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival; it enjoyed the rare distinction among documentaries of having its American remake rights purchased by a major movie studio.
