Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man suffering from a strange malady confronts a world that doesn't know what to make of him in this drama from filmmaker Adan Aliaga. Bruno (Manuel Martinez) is a kind-hearted but physically huge man who works as a janitor. One day, Bruno wakes up to discover strange wounds have appeared on the palms of his hands; they bleed constantly and never heal but seem immune to infection, and doctors can find no explanation for them. Many in the neighborhood believe Bruno's wounds are holy stigmata like the wounds Christ received at Calvary; some imagine Bruno has healing powers while others believe he is a creature of evil, but he doesn't put much stock in their theory and hits the road in search of a place where he can live in peace. After variety of odd jobs, including a stint as a handyman at a convent, Bruno joins a traveling carnival and finds love with earthy but caring Lorena (Marieta Orozco), but fate does not have a happy ending in store for the couple. Estigmas (aka Stigmata) was an official selection at the 2010 Seattle International Film Festival.
