The story used in Stick to Your Guns, number four in the B-Western screenwriter's manual (or is it five?), was so old by 1941 that even the Hopalong Cassidy series had been down the very same dusty trail a couple of times already, notably in Bar 20 Rides Again. But producer Harry Sherman's Hopalong Cassidy unit could and often would take a stale idea and make it seem new and fresh. They did so in this film by hiring one of the best directors in the business, Leslie Selander, and a supporting cast that knew exactly what they were doing. Add the scenic splendors of Kernville and Lone Pine, CA, a first-rate cameraman (Russell Harlan, no less), and a couple of fine campfire songs by Jimmy Wakely and his congregation, and not even a couple of below-par ingenues (Brad King, a true nonentity, and the novice Jennifer Holt) could ruin what remains an above-average B-Western adventure.
