Review by Karl Williams

A disjointed script and incoherent direction from Andrew Davis mark the major flaws of his disappointing follow-up to his smash hit The Fugitive (1993). A helpful note for filmmakers: a good rule of thumb in picking scripts is that if there are more than two screenwriters who have done substantial enough rewriting that they're going to receive onscreen credit, think seriously about tackling different material. This particular project has no less than six credited scribes, an artistic kiss of death that, indeed, results in a crazy quilt story that makes little sense. The upside is that, by the time the twin characters played by Andy Garcia switch identities, viewers will no longer care that they don't understand why it's happening. Nor will they give a hoot that there are some performances going on here, notably Garcia, a really likable performer with wretched taste in material, and the always trustworthy sidekick Alan Arkin, whose character maybe should have been the protagonist (it couldn't have hurt the film). Steal Big, Steal Little (1995) is a confusing mess of a project standing as proof positive that Davis should stick with action flicks and thrillers.
