Synopsis by Violet LeVoit
An oddball white woman (Julianne Nicholson) falls for a handsome and cultured Japanese-American man (Takashi Yamaguchi) after he's stranded in her rural South Carolina town. Despite his winning over her neighbors with his gardening skills and knowledge of blues records, the lovers must deal with racist disapproval of their relationship -- which only intensifies after the events of Pearl Harbor and the onset of WWII. Written and directed by Maggie Greenwald (who adapted the script from the novel of the same name by Augusta Trobaugh), Sophie and the Rising Sun made its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
