Jimmy Wakely later acknowledged Song of the Sierras as the favorite among his 28 starring Westerns for Monogram. It also, Wakely claimed, came with the highest price tag of the entire series, costing an estimated 42,000 dollars. In other words, quite a handy sum for director Oliver Drake to play around with. The result, while marginally better perhaps than the rest of Wakely's oeuvre, is still not top-flight B-Western entertainment; for that, Drake's story (co-written with veteran director Elmer Clifton) is simply too derivative.
