Fans of Betty Hutton will want to see Somebody Loves Me, but even the most dedicated fans of the screen's most energetic performer may find this bio-pic to be lacking. Hutton is not to blame; as always, she gives 110% of herself (and 110% of Hutton is equal to about 175% of anyone else). And those who find Hutton's enthusiasm not always to their taste will be glad to note that, while as energetic as ever, she doesn't push quite as hard as she often does, providing for some nice, quiet moments. The star is in very good voice, despite having had throat surgery a short time before making Somebody. Her rendition of the title song is lovely, and she makes all her numbers shine. But she can't do much with a script that is tired, tired, tired -- and only occasionally sticks to the facts regarding Blossom Seeley and Benny Fields. Things would be better if she had support from her co-star, but Ralph Meeker is dull and uncomfortable (although he's dubbed with a nice singing voice). The supporting cast helps, but they can't overcome the trite, clichéd script.
