In this drama set in 19th-century Russia, a humble clerk finds himself fixated on his employer's daughter. Eventually his obsession begins to drive him mad. He begins conversing with a wooden puppet and then writing unreal letters back to his dog who has apparently written letters to him. Toward the end, the poor fellow begins to believe that he is the King of Spain. His belief isn't swayed, even when he is carted off to the insane asylum.
