Review by Jason Clark

A slapdash mixture of farce and frenzy behind the scenes of daytime soap operas, Michael Hoffman's breezy but overbearing comedy benefits from solid and funny turns by leads Sally Field and Kevin Kline -- both blessed with the ability to overact effectively. The trouble is that the frenetic pace of the film hardly allows the viewer to invest in the characters even on a passive level, and its pointed satire is overripe and seriously dated, not to mention that daytime television is one of the easiest targets anyone could hope for. This is a far cry from the brilliantly delineated soap opera world created in Sydney Pollack's Tootsie (1982), a movie that seamlessly blended backstage showbiz satire with a healthy respect for human comedy. Apparently, audiences were equally unimpressed with it, falling off the radar in a summer that included fare such as Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which predictably buried this film's chances at achieving blockbuster status.
